Our Monthly Giving appeal is now well established to ensure ongoing and much needed funds.
I am not sure if you are aware but childhood cancer is still the leading cause of disease related death in children aged 1-14 years, second only to poisons and injury (Brain cancer is 35%, Leukaemia 32%, also Lymphoma, Bone and Liver cancer).
It is abundantly clear that the cause of these cancers needs to be found. It
is often said that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
To add insult to injury, a child who has been cured of their initial cancer
has an increased risk of developing a second cancer later in their life.
Childhood cancer progresses rapidly, often assisted by the natural speed
of growth inherent in a child’s tissues. A quick diagnosis greatly
enhances the child’s chance of survival.
The causes of childhood cancer are largely unknown. Ongoing research funding
is urgently needed to provide rapid and accurate tests, development of new
anti-cancer drugs and research into other possible methods of preventing
and curing childhood cancer.
Compared to adult cancer statistics, childhood cancer is relatively infrequent.
Due to this, pharmaceutical companies do not consider it profitable to invest
in the research and development of paediatric drugs. Currently, many existing
adult cancer drugs are used to treat children but many of these drugs have
toxic side effects.
The Australian Government 2001 figures estimated that the average treatment
costs per case is around $16,000. This figure indicated direct treatment
costs only.
